The complete Schengen visa documents checklist
Most Schengen consulates in Dubai and Abu Dhabi ask for the same core documents. Bring originals and one set of photocopies, in the order below.
1. Identity and residence
- Passport valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with at least 2 blank visa pages. Bring old passports with previous visas too.
- UAE residence visa valid for at least 3 months after your planned return to the UAE, plus a copy of your Emirates ID (front and back).
- Application form completed online on the consulate’s or visa centre’s portal, printed, signed and dated. Both parents sign for children under 18.
- Two photos, 35 × 45 mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months, face covering 70 to 80% of the photo.
2. Travel plans
- Return flight reservation showing your dates in and out of the Schengen area. You don’t need to buy the ticket before the visa is issued, but the booking must be genuine.
- Hotel bookings for every night, or an invitation letter from your host with their address and a copy of their ID or residence permit.
- Day-by-day itinerary if you visit more than one country.
- Travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries for your whole trip, including repatriation. Credit-card travel cover is usually not accepted.
3. Money and employment
- Bank statements for the last 3 months (some consulates ask for 6), stamped by your UAE bank, showing salary credits and enough money for the trip.
- NOC or employer letter on company letterhead with your position, start date, salary, approved leave dates, the purpose of travel and confirmation that you will return to work. It should include the company’s address and phone number.
- Salary slips for the last 3 months, if your employer issues them.

How to apply for a Schengen visa from Dubai, step by step
- Pick the right country. Apply to the country where you spend the most nights. If nights are equal, apply to the country you enter first.
- Book a visa centre appointment with that country’s provider in Dubai or Abu Dhabi (VFS Global, TLScontact or BLS International). Summer slots fill weeks ahead, so book as soon as your dates are firm.
- Fill in the application form and gather the checklist above.
- Attend your appointment to submit documents, pay the fees and give fingerprints. Fingerprints taken in the last 59 months can sometimes be reused.
- Wait for the decision, usually about 15 calendar days. Your passport stays with the consulate during processing.
- Collect your passport and check the visa dates, number of entries and your name before you travel.
What changed at Schengen borders in 2026
The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running since 10 April 2026. When you arrive with a Schengen visa, the border officer records your fingerprints and a photo of your face, and the system logs your entries and exits instead of stamping your passport. It also counts your 90 days automatically, so overstaying is easy to detect. Allow extra time at the airport on your first trip.
Common reasons Schengen visas are refused
- Residence visa or passport with too little validity left.
- Bank statements that don’t show regular income, or a large deposit just before applying with no explanation.
- Applying to the wrong country for your itinerary.
- Insurance below €30,000 or not covering the whole trip.
- Fake or cancelled bookings. Consulates check, and false documents lead to refusal.
- An employer letter missing your leave dates or return-to-work confirmation.
Schengen visa FAQs for UAE residents
How much does a Schengen visa cost from Dubai?
The embassy fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, paid in dirhams. Children under 6 pay nothing. The visa centre (VFS Global, TLScontact or BLS International) adds its own service fee, and optional extras such as SMS updates or courier return cost more.
How long does a Schengen visa take from the UAE?
Most consulates decide within 15 calendar days of your appointment. It can take up to 45 days if extra checks are needed, so apply at least 4 to 6 weeks before you fly, and earlier for summer and December travel.
How many months of bank statements do I need?
Usually the last 3 months, stamped by your bank. Some consulates, and applicants with irregular income, are asked for 6 months. Check the checklist for the country you apply to.
How long must my UAE residence visa be valid?
Most Schengen consulates in the UAE require your residence visa to be valid for at least 3 months after you return from your trip. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying.
Which country should I apply to if I visit several?
Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If you spend the same number of nights in each, apply to the country you enter first.
Do I need to buy my flight ticket before applying?
No. A genuine flight reservation is enough for most consulates. Buy the ticket after your visa is approved.
