Quick answer

Most UAE residents who don’t hold a UAE or other GCC passport need a UK Standard Visitor visa. You apply online on GOV.UK up to 3 months before travel, pay £135 for a 6-month visa, and give fingerprints at a VFS Global centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Decisions usually take about 3 weeks. Emirati citizens don’t need a visa: they apply online for a £20 Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

Do you need a UK visa or an ETA?

It depends on your passport, not on where you live. Living in the UAE doesn’t change which one you need.

UK visit visa documents checklist

The UK has no fixed list of documents. The officer decides whether you are a genuine visitor who will leave on time and can pay for the trip. These are the documents that make that case for UAE residents.

Identity and residence

  • Passport valid for your whole stay, with at least one blank page, plus any old passports showing past travel.
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. A residence visa valid well beyond your return shows you are coming back.
  • Printed GOV.UK application and your VFS Global appointment confirmation.

Money and ties to the UAE

  • Bank statements for the last 6 months, showing regular salary credits and enough money for the trip. Large unexplained deposits weaken an application.
  • Employer letter (NOC) with your job title, salary, start date, approved leave and return date, plus recent salary slips.
  • Business owners: trade licence, memorandum of association and company bank statements.
  • Home and family ties: Ejari tenancy contract or title deed, and your family’s residence visas if they stay in the UAE.

Your trip

  • Itinerary with dates, cities and the purpose of each part of the trip.
  • Hotel bookings, or an invitation letter from your UK host with their address, immigration status and proof of it (passport or residence permit copy).
  • Flight reservation. You don’t need to buy tickets before the visa is approved.
  • English translations of any document in Arabic or another language, with the translator’s details.

How to apply for a UK visit visa from Dubai, step by step

  1. Apply online on GOV.UK and answer every question exactly as your documents show: travel history, employment and income.
  2. Pay the £135 fee online, and add Priority or Super Priority if you need a faster decision and it is offered.
  3. Book a VFS Global appointment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. You can use either centre, whichever emirate you live in.
  4. Upload or bring your documents and give your fingerprints and photo at the appointment.
  5. Wait for the decision, usually about 3 weeks, then collect your passport from VFS Global or by courier.

Common reasons UK visit visas are refused

  • Not enough evidence that you will return to the UAE: a short residence visa, no stable job or no home here.
  • Bank statements that don’t match the salary in your employer letter, or a lump-sum deposit with no explanation.
  • Mistakes or gaps in the online form, especially past refusals in any country. Always declare them.
  • A trip that doesn’t add up: very long stays, costs far above your income, or an unclear purpose.
